Orioles aim to rebound in rubber match against Indians
Baseball Betting Lines
05/16/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - With their three-game win streak now history, the Baltimore Orioles try to work their way back into the win column this afternoon as they close out a three-game set with the Cleveland Indians at Camden Yards.
After holding the Indians scoreless through the first eight innings on Saturday thanks to starter Brian Matusz, who allowed just seven hits and four walks while striking out six through seven innings, the bullpen faltered and opened the door for the Tribe to explode for an 8-2 win. Alfredo Simon and Cla Meredith both gave up four earned runs in the ninth, with Austin Kearns connecting on a three-run home run to put the Indians ahead for good.
"With how things have gone, you're just hoping for another chance," Kearns said. "Some guys had some big at-bats in the ninth ... It just kind of went from there."
Also knocking in two runs apiece were Mike Redmond and Trevor Crowe, the latter posting his first home of the season in the event.
Mitch Talbot fought for the win on the mound, giving up just two runs on a pair of solo home runs to Ty Wigginton. The rest of the O's combined for just three hits as Talbot worked his way through eight innings for his fifth win of the campaign.
Desperate to pick up his first win of the season, David Hernandez is slated to take the hill for the Orioles today. The right-hander entered the weekend with the most losses in the American League with five and his 23 walks also one of the highest totals in the league.
Hernandez, having picked up little run support in his many setbacks, last pitched on Tuesday against Seattle at home, lasting 5 2/3 innings as he surrendered four earned runs on five hits and four bases-on-balls. Since opening the campaign with a 3-0 loss to Toronto, Hernandez has watched his ERA balloon to 5.84, raising his career number to 5.53 in the process.
As for the Indians, they plan on giving the ball to Jake Westbrook in hopes that he can win for the second time in as many starts. The right-hander had his best outing of the season thus far on Tuesday when he limited the Kansas City Royals to only one run on five hits, walking two and striking out a pair over six innings as he posted his first victory of 2010.
Now two games under .500 for his career (64-66), Westbrook has had more walks than strikeouts in three of seven games this season, making it easy to see why he has almost as many base-on-balls (19) as K's (23) to this point.
In his eight career games against the Orioles, Westbrook has produced a 3-2 record and a 4.73 ERA.
Baltimore, which has the worst overall record in the American League entering play on Sunday, has gotten a lift from Wigginton in the last six games as he leads the squad with 10 hits and five runs scored over that span. Luke Scott, who is batting just .225 on the season overall, has seven of the unit's 21 RBI in the last week but that still doesn't make up for a player like Cesar Izturis, who has just one hit in his last 17 at-bats.
Russell Branyan, who was sent in as a pinch-hitter on Saturday for the Indians, has three home runs in his last 15 at-bats for a team that is hitting .282 over the last six games. Unfortunately, for the season overall both Cleveland and Baltimore are hitting just .249.
A win this afternoon for the Indians in Baltimore would mean they've logged a pair of wins on the road versus the O's for four consecutive years.

New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – The dress rehearsal is over! The NHL preseason has ended and now that fans have had a glimpse of what is to come it is time to hit the book! Stanley Cup odds are live at MySportsbook.com, the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino.
The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings remain on top of the odds charts after an impressive start in the preseason. Betting lines opened for both teams at 6-1 in June. Since then the Sens have fallen to 7-1 and the Red Wings are now caught in a pack including the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, all at 10-1.
MySportsbook.com has also posted props on each team’s point total for the regular season. The Senators lead the charge at 108.5 followed by the Ducks at 106.5. Detroit will attempt a repeat for the prize as the Red Wings are deadlocked with the Predators at 104.5 a piece. The temporary loss of highly touted rookie Evgeni Malkin puts a lot of pressure on the stick of assistant captain Sidney Crosby - his lowly Pittsburgh Penguins are listed at 71.5.
Even if bettors are not brave enough to put their money on the underdog, an early bet on the favorites at sportsbook.com tends to produce bigger payouts than a mid-season wager. Placing a $1,000 bet last summer on the Detroit Red Wings or Ottawa Senators would have paid out to $8,000 and $10,000 respectively, opposed to a $2,500 or $3,000 payout at the beginning of the playoffs.
